Review - Editor's personal experience at the Grand Casino Lido in Catez:
This is a small but pleasant casino on two floor levels, with nearby Hotels and a Spa centre (the largest Spa in Slovenia). There is an in-house bar and a restaurant with good food at a very reasonable price and with an excellent service. There are various slot and video games including a progressive jackpot, minimum bet 1c, an 8-terminal Touchbet roulette carousel, and five table games of which two are American single-zero roulette. You tip the dealer (optional) if you win at roulette, and when zero comes up you lose your 'even money' bets - the La Partage or the En Prison rule is not applied. They have 1 table Caribbean 'draw' poker where you can change one card while on the 'Ante' bet, and two blackjack tables. Minimum bet on the table games start at one Euro and later in the evening go up to two Euro. The management and casino personnel are welcoming and helpful and offer a free daily shuttle service from your hotel to the casino and back.
Rating:Very good casino!

Review - Editor's personal experience at the Grand Casino Ljubljana:
This is a medium/large and very nice casino located in the basement of the 4-star Austria Trend Hotel Ljubljana - a very nice hotel. The casino is accessed from the street as well as from inside the hotel, but it is not part of the hotel. It is the only casino in the capital that has live table games. There is a casino bar and an elegant restaurant serving very good food at very reasonable prices, and the service is excellent. The menu is in Slovenian and Italian language only, but the waiters do speak a bit of English. At roulette the minimum bet is 1 Euro on the numbers as well as on the outside bets. The Caribbean stud poker has a progressive jackpot. If you are staying at the hotel you get free a 5 Euro ticket to play on the slot machines or electronic roulette. The management and casino personnel are welcoming and helpful.
    Rating:Very good casino!

Like the Perla Casino (below), the Park Casino is part of the HIT Group and is a smaller version of the Perla Casino. It is a nice and pleasant casino, welcoming and popular. The casino is within the 4-star Park hotel. Most gaming machines and table games are the same as in the Perla Casino except for the roulette tables, which are under-sized and it feels uncomfortable to play if the table is busy. The Park Casino is located about .7 km from the Perla Casino, about ten minutes walk.

Useful information on Slovenia

General: Slovenia, officially the Republic of Slovenia, is one of the most scenic of the formerly socialist countries. Slovenia operates under a parliamentary democracy. In May 2004, Slovenia became a member of the European Union. Slovenia is also a member of the Eurozone, the Schengen area, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, the Council of Europe, NATO, UNESCO, WTO, and UN. Ljubljana ('lyoob-lyAH-nah') is the capital city, lying in a valley half way between the Alps and the Adriatic Sea at the confluence of the Sava and Ljubljanica rivers. The population of the city is around 300,000. Internet country code: .si, International telephone country code: +386
Airports: Slovenia has 3 international airports and Ljubljana airport is by far the busiest airport in the country with connections to many major European destinations. The second largest international airport serves Maribor. The third and smallest international airport is in Secovlje near the resort town of Portorož, which only serves small private aircraft.
Sea port: Koper
Transportation:
- By plane: Ljubljana's small Jože Pucnik Airport (also known as Brnik Airport or Aerodrom Ljubljana), located 27 km north of the city, is the country's main international gateway and the hub of Slovenian national carrier Adria Airways.. The airport is serviced by flights from many European countries. The airport's facilities include parking, a bank, a post office, ATMs, an information desk, free WiFi Internet access in the terminal, a general store, duty-free stores, a money exchange office, a self-serve restaurant, and bars and cafes.
- By train: From the Ljubljana train station you can get to anywhere in Slovenia (there is not a place in the country more than 3 hours away), and daily direct international connections to Zagreb (2 hours), Rijeka (3 h), Graz (3 h), Salzburg (4 h), Pula (4 h), Venice (5 h), Vienna (6 h), Munich (6 h), Budapest (9 h), Belgrade (9 h), Frankfurt (10 h), Zürich (11 hours). For Trieste, take a train to Villa Opicina and then the tram (Line 2) to Trieste. The Ljubljana train station is housed in a nice building with useful facilities like luggage storage and a tourist office, and everyone speaks English. The train station is at Trg Osvobodilne Fronte (OF) at the northern edge of downtown, at walking distance to most hotels and attractions. The Slovenian railway system has a useful website with an English version (www.slo-zeleznice.si) that can make your travel plans easier.
- By bus: Ljubljana bus station (avtobusna postaja [6]) is right next to the train station and has services throughout Slovenia, as well as to foreign countries. The station has several useful schedule search engines (also in English) for working out connections. Generally speaking, a bus can take you almost anywhere in Slovenia within at most a few hours.
Taxis: Ljubljana's taxis are safe, clean and generally reliable. The starting rate is €1, the rate per kilometre is between €1 and 1.70, with no extra charge at night. Waiting costs €15-20 per hour. Ordering a taxi by phone should get you lower rates. Rumeni Taxi (www.rumenitaxi.com, English version: www.rumenitaxi.com/english/) is one of the cheapest taxi service to use in the city and elsewhere, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Rumeni Taxi stands for 'yellow taxi'. Call them from any Slovenian phone on 041 731 881, or from your foreign mobile phone on +386 41 731 881.
Currency: The legal currency in Slovenia is the Euro (EUR), since 1 January 2007.
Smoking: According to Slovenian law smoking in public places is prohibited including casinos. Some casinos have a separate dedicated smoking facility.

The largest Slovenian casino is the Perla entertainment centre (of the HIT company) in Nova Gorica with over 1000 slots/video machines and 70 live table games. The development of the casino industry in Slovenia began with the first casino in Portorož, which was followed by casinos in Bled, Maribor, Nova Gorica, Lipica, Ljubljana, Kranjska Gora, Rogaška Slatina, and Otocec.
