Summer 2016

This class is supposedly one of the easier first year classes, and a “guaranteed A” for anyone. But in order to curve off the number of people trying to get into this class it is often scheduled as a night class. If you are a math-type person, enjoy gambling, or just learning how to gamble, Poker 101. MAT1374 - Probability and games of chance (POKER 101) 'The main themes of this course are: making decisions in situations of uncertainty, strategic thinking, and the applications of these to a wide variety of areas, including games of chance such as poker.'

15 March 2016: Welcome to the course! I've added the syllabus, some old exams for practice, and some notes. Most importantly, I've added a document giving an introduction to math at the University of Ottawa; I encourage you all to read the first few pages. This course will run July 4 to August 15, 2016.

Syllabus

Joseph Khoury has a fantastic introduction to mathematics at the University of Ottawa. If this is your first course at a university, I strongly urge you to read the introductory material (it is about 18 pages). Many, many students have a hard time making the transition from high school at first, and in a 7 week course it is extremely easy to fall behind even as you feel like everything is fine. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions. The remainder of the document is a review of high school algebra, which might be useful as a reference. You are responsible for understanding all of this material, and it will not be covered in class.

Lecture Notes: I write this document as reminders to myself before lectures. I think it is best used as a general guide to where the course is going, and as a compilation of worked examples. It is not meant as a textbook replacement!

I noticed a few common notational errors in Homework 1. I give a few informal comments on these errors here. Normally these comments would be via email, but some students still do not have access to blackboard's emails and so I include them here.

Final Exam Questions. This was taken on August 17.

Final Exam Solutions. Note: the solution to question 11 in the multiple choice section is given as B. This is incorrect: the right solution is E. It seems that many people found this question confusing, and B is the 'expected' situation. As a result, both responses B and E were marked as correct. All other solutions were marked as incorrect.
